Simple yet Interesting Art

Look at this simple piece of art, yet it is very interesting. Using the black on the bottom gives the image a foundation. It’s interesting how he uses a transition from black to blue in a random way and it suddenly goes to white color also in a random way. The white color makes the focal point of this piece of art. From white it jumps to dark orange and it starts get brighter until merges into the yellow color. In the center of the yellow color there is a very bright point. From there the yellow color starts to get darker until it gets to the end of the piece of art. The colors that are being used are supplementary colors. Using transition and a sudden color change makes it look nice. The material that has been used to make this painting doesn’t look like it’s a painting material. It’s either a rectangular stick or a similar object. Having the colors merging into each other in random way throughout this piece of art keeps the flow of the art smooth with a pattern. Combining all these features of this piece of art gives makes it gestalt.

What is Design all about.

Going to the lecture today by Nathan Shedroff was one of the best experiences I have experienced in my life. This person knows what he is talking about in the back of his hand. I wish his lecture was longer. Anyway, let me share with you few of the things he talked about today. Design, sustainability, business are three different circles. They all have to merge over each other to have a higher success. The overlap of these three circles is experience. The center of the experience is meaning. Meaning has four inner categories which are value, emotion, price, and feature. All these are a lot of information to be discussed. I just mentioned them so you can see the big picture. If we focus on the meaning we will be successful designers.

Let’s talk about sustainability since it’s a very important concept. Sustainability is has three inner categories which are financial, social, and ecological. As you noticed the financial is the first one because it’s the most important. He said if you want to succeed in creativity and have sustained design, cut off two zeros from the budget. Social is us human. The design must make something easier to use, friendlier, and as simple as possible. Ecological is the natural system. When designing you take in consideration of the materials being used. How is it going to affect the next generation. It must be easy to be recycled. We have to take all these in consideration to be able to succeed. I want you to think about this question maybe for the next ten years or so. What is a more sustainable world would look like? If we are able to answer this question we will be able to live a better life.

Objectified!

What is a designer? What takes to be a good designer? The definition of designer is the way you look at the world around you. Each designer should watch an objectified documentary film by Gary Hustwit.

It talks about what makes a good design. Being a successful designer requires a lot of effort, time and patience. You have to think outside the box. Be unfashionable. “Try stuff then ask forgiveness” as said by David Kelley. Designer look what are the most used stuff in daily life and try to make it easier for use. When making things easier to use they’re manipulating old thing into new things and that what we look for as consumers. We like to experience new things. Sometimes a design will make you sense an emotion that really touches you, with that you hope that others will get this sense of emotion you felt for that specific design. A successful designer should always try to have in his design honesty, simple, understandable, easier for use, smaller, lighter…etc. As you work on a design, the process is very important because it can lead you to other ideas, and the other ideas should lead into more and more… Something you never thought about will just come and make a difference in people’s life. Not all the ideas are perfect or will work as you imagined it. Like what David said “Try stuff then ask forgiveness.”

A successful designer thinks what will happen afterwards. Now day’s designers have to take consideration of the different materials they use and make sure they are environment friendly. With that inconsideration, it somewhat limits the materials. Being an eco friendly is very important for the future generation. A successful designer will be able to use recyclable materials. An example of a company that takes that inconsideration is Apple. I bet you wonder sometimes why Apple has been so successful. That is one of the reasons that make them successful.

Inside the Burj Al Arab

Let us look inside the hotel Burj Al Arab that we talked about a month ago. It is designed pretty crazy. As you noticed almost everything is designed by repetition and similarity. Let’s start from the bottom to the top of the image. Looking at the water fall how it’s making a half oval shape and the three dimension look of the square it’s coming out from with a repetition gives it a nice depth view. The windows that are in every floor are being repeated with the same design giving the hotel a beautiful view from the bottom. The colors that are being used are supplementary colors that are brown, gold and dark/light blue. The building color starts from the bottom with dark brown and as it goes up, the color gets brighter until it gets to gold. Very similar with blue lighting, the hall ways are dark blue while the outside lighting is light blue. The colors are connected by transition. The brown and gold color gives a sense of warming and comfort. Using colors with transition and the similarities of the building structure gives it a sense of unity. Notice how the bright blue color in the center is a focal point of the image.

3 pieces = 1

Three pieces of art make an abstract fine art. Look at the similarity in each one. Notice how they flow into each other. The curved lines give the art a rhythm to it. The gutter between the three art works lets the brain relate these images to each other. It’s actually called closure. The two different textures used in the background makes it interesting and at the same time its filling all the negative spots. Let us focus on the colors of the art work. The two supplementary colors that are used are blue and brown. The textures are mixed of these two colors. The oval shapes are blue with shading to make them look 3-D. Adding white in the centers of the oval shapes shows how the lighting is coming on the piece of art. To keep the picture balanced they used few oval shapes that are in brown color. Notice the striped lines across the image are combined of the two colors. They go inside, outside and between the oval shapes keeping the piece of art balanced. Check the pattern on each part of the art and see how they’re related to the whole art. You notice how they flow into each other’s. Being a successful designer you have to be unique.

Warm & Cool Colors affects

This piece of art work is showing fall season. Looking at the interesting colors of the trees gives a person a sense of warm weather. It is funny how we relate the visual sensation of color to warm and cool. Warm and cool are sensation of feel, touch, not sight. How did we know it’s warm not cool? Let us associate the colors with objects so we can see how it’s related to physical sensation. The color red and orange relate to fire and yellow to sunlight. Because of these we relate those colors to warm colors. Similarly, blue is for sky and/or water, green is for grass and/or plants. Those colors relate to cool colors. Now you know how to give a sensation of colors on an art work. Looking at the different value of colors shows us were is the light striking in the image is usually called tint. This done by adding white to the color you’re using to make it bright. Having low value colors were the light is not hitting it directly and just reflecting on the tree is called shade. Shade is done by adding black to the color you’re using to change its value to dark. Color plays a BIG role in your everyday life.

Hmong Story Quilt

Title: Hmong Story Quilt,
Date: 1970s
Author/Designed: Bee, Montana USA
Location: UC Davis Art Museum

What comes to mind when you first look at this quilt in terms of design. We see pattern, repetition, and rhythm. There is more but we are only going to focus on these three terms. Where do we see repetition? The two outlines of this quilt are done by repetition. Looking inside the outlines we see different symbols. Each symbol in the quilt has a meaning to it. Will get back to the meaning but let’s pay attention to the different scales of the different symbols that are in the quilt. Notice that they’re few different symbols, but each symbol has a certain repetition with also taking in the consideration of the pattern it’s in. Looking at different patterns we can see the rhythm in the quilt. Using the word rhythm sounds funny because rhythm is used to when expressing sound. But in design rhythm is a visual sensation. In this quilt it has been expressed as the repetition and pattern of different symbols. It gives a unity feeling. Let’s look at it closely ands see what the author trying to show us. It looks like we are shown how the Vietnamese are living. We are not going to go in details in this but now you know how to express rhythm in design.

Interesting Art Work no Focal Point

This piece of art is by by Shari Ulman. Each square has an icon. Notice how she kept a balance in terms of the icons. Most of the icons have different scales. It depended where she had it in this piece of art. Some are very small and solid colors, while others are extended beyond the square with texture. This is all done to keep the balance equally in this piece of art. If you notice how this piece of art doesn’t have a focal point inside it. You can say the piece of art as whole is a focal point. The reason behind this is that the designer used grid to keep the art work balanced. When you use a grid, it creates unity as a whole. That’s why you see the whole picture as a focal point. Looking at the colors in each square, you see some are solid while others are striped. They’re done in this way to keep this piece of art work balanced with the icons that are on them. Notice that the solid square colors have texture icon on it, while the striped squares have solid color icon. Using variety of different icons made this piece of art work interesting.

Interesting Piece of Art from Crocker Museum

Very interesting picture I took at the Crocker Museum. This piece of art has unique rhythm. If you notice that the art piece is made of small squares that are connected to each others. These small squares make the big picture of our old president George W. Bush when you are looking at it from far. As you get closer the bigger picture starts to disappear and you start to notice different icons that are on these small squares. Notice how they’re put in pattern. Each square has a symbol. Being placed in different part of this piece of art gives it a different meaning to it. Let’s zoom in at one part of the image and see what they mean.

We notice a dice that is showing different faces of it and some are repeated, a person being punished, missiles in the air, fire is everywhere, different view of the stairs, and broken walls. It looks like the author is connecting the big picture with these small ones which we can relate to war that our president got us into. Anyway, look at it closely you can see the repetition and rhythm the author uses. This piece of art work is proportional. It is very interesting how he has them connected. That is why his art work got put in a museum.

Mathematics Design

Repetition and proportion play a big role in this piece of art. Let’s take a more depth look on repetition. Repetition is an element that is being repeated. It can be anything, for example, color, shape, texture, or direction. This piece of art is mainly repetition. Look and observe how each hexagon, pentagons, different shapes and sizes of the stars, and even the small negative spaces are connected together and forming a gestalt. If you slice through in almost any place, it will be symmetrical. Let’s take a look at the proportion part of this art. Proportion is defined as the balanced relationship of all the parts to the whole, either visual or structural. Looking at the piece of art you can see it has been well balanced in structural and visual part of it. The shapes of hexagon, pentagons, stars, negative space are proportion. Like we mentioned earlier, if you sliced the art through in almost any place it will be symmetrical. What is this piece of art? Muslims are not allowed to have any illustration of any of Gods creations and so they resort of mathematics to find ways of decorating their place of worship. This is one of the many different designs they use to decorate their mosque.

Fine Digital Art

Fine art is always beautiful. Looking at this fine digital art work makes us wonder on how sometimes when we look at a picture we look at main point of the picture first. It’s not necessary to be in the center of the picture. But from that point our eyes flow to the rest of the picture. Every artist decides were does he want the main point to be on the picture. This point is called focal point. It attracts the audience to where to begin in the picture. One way to make a focal point in your picture is to have a different contrast in it which makes it stand out from everything around it. Now, from there the artist directs on how they want us as to flow through the picture. They use different line structure to do that. Notice how our brain groups every two lines together, even though they’re many lines in the picture. Also the lines that are on the top have a brighter color than the ones in the back. Our brain tries always to make things simple by uniting all the similar ones. It groups them by proximity, continuation, repetition and so on. These different grouping all falls under gestalt. Next time you look at piece of art work notice where the focal point is and how your brain unites similar elements together.

2 in 1

Examine this drawing. Notice that this picture is two dimensional. Very simple drawn. Now look at the drawing closely. What do you see? A wine cup or two faces that is close to each others. It’s pretty interesting how your brain can show you two images on a single picture. How you think something like that works? Well….it depends on what you make the negative space. If you make the sides negative you will see the wine cup. Same thing the opposite way, if you make the middle space negative, you will see the two faces. This is called gestalt. Gestalt in psychology is how our minds seek unity when unity doesn't exist. The way our mind groups things Is the way a picture will appear to us. There are many ways to achieve unity. Here are few of them; proximity, repetition, continuation, continuity and the grid, the grid, varied repetition…etc. Take a close look on how simple this drawing is very well balanced. It may look simple, but look on how it meets everything for an image to look perfect. Did you notice that the drawing doesn’t have a border line and it still comes out very well? We will leave this discussion for later.

Interesting peice of Art

Iris Leaves with Rowan Berries, By Andy Goldsworthy 1956

Check out this incredible medium that the artist used. He got his work done on water. How can one someone think of something like that. How can someone do it so perfect? He used Iris leaves to make the design while filing in some parts of it with Rowan berries. To be able to do things like that you have to be really in aesthetics. He has done the six step design process we mentioned in the earlier blog. As you noticed everything is natural in his design. Looking at this abstract design really makes the person wonders. Many artists like to express things rather than to illustrate them. Most designers now days represent both. Pay attention on how the design of leaves is not too little or too much. When something is too little you feel it needs more work done on it. Same thing when it is too much. It starts taking away the point of the art work or it makes it really confusion to look at. Also, you somewhat notice a pattern of the leaves and the berries. As you stare the art work more you get appreciate it and understand it better. That is how we communicate as designers.

How to make it better...

Looking at something that exist in society and trying to improve it is not as easy as someone can think. Let’s take a look at this bicycle. It has different gears on the front and back chain stay which can be controlled from the handle bar. The handle bar also has the brake lever that controls the front and back brake caliper. The seat is adjustable to ones size. Look at the spokes on both wheels you see the reflectors on them, which are also on the handlebar post and seat post. Looking at the bike with all its features makes you think that the bike has everything that can be add on it. Being a designer you have to think outside box. For example, let’s add an umbrella that is built-in on the bike since we are getting close to the winter. How? We will have it on the cross bar but close to the handle bar. After spending time on this project and finishing it, innovation has occurred. Doing this we just did the six steps of the process of design which are purpose, form, idiom, structure, quality, and surface. We didn’t show all the steps here, but we assume we finished the project completely. To be able to design, you have to go through the six step process to succeed.

Still Life

Still Life, Kilkenny limestone, 1988, on Dartmoor. Artist: Peter Randall

Look at this art and notice how the artist has three icons each with a salient point. What are the icons he is using trying to represent? By looking at this piece of art you can think that the artist is always lonely. He thinks he is odd or unique from everyone else around him. If you look at each icon and see there is a little similarities between them. At the same time each one is laying down different the other. Choosing this background or place to put these icons tells you the artist is into nature or it could he is in a recovery period. It also could mean he is in suffering or issues but there is hope for everything to get better and back like it was and possibly better because of the small amount of water he has in the design. Also, having a little green area and the majority is dry supports the statement above. You can look on how he has taking in the consideration of the positive and negative of surrounding. This made us think why he has them next to each other and not randomly put. We can pursue this from different angles and have different views. This shows how every person thinks according to his situation.

Highest Tennis court

Have you heard of the highest tennis court in the world? Well…the highest tennis court in the world is on the tallest hotel in the world which is Burj Al-arab. Pretty interesting isn't it. A person has to be creative to success in a design like this. Ever thought how people do things like that or even get the idea. Have you thought of design? What is it? Is design verb or noun? How it can change the world around us? All these questions come to mind. Let's start by defining design. It’s a way of showing an outline of something. It can be an image, object, conversation...etc. Design can be both verb and noun. It depends how you are trying to express something. If you look around you, everything is related to design. The world wouldn’t exist if design didn’t exist. Go back and look at the design of the tennis court. Do you notice how it’s a circle and not a rectangle? Why do you think is that? I will let you answer that question. Look at it how it’s sticking out on the side of the hotel instead of being on top. Ever wonder why they have it coming out from the side. You think it was put there by accident. Of course not, this is part of being a designer. To let people think about your design more than just to look and say wow…

Burj Al Arab

Burj Al-arab is a very popular building in the Middle East. It is located in Dubai. To enter it cost $100 for a tour. It’s the only hotel that is considered a 7-star. It hits the record as being the only building that is built exclusively hotel, has the tallest atrium lobby, and it has elevators that are among the fastest in the world. Its night starts at $1000 and up. It has its own private bridge that is connected from Jumeirah beach to it. It took about three years to build the foundation of the building and less than three years to build the building itself. What makes this building so special? It all goes back to design in society. Designing this building in a unique way caused it to stand out from all the others. Looking at the structure and were it is built makes everyone astonish. The structure and the colors of this building looks like sail in the middle of the beach. It gives it a beautiful look from the eye bird view. Everything in the hotel is designed in a unique way. When a person goes to this hotel he will be aesthetics from its incredible design. If a person is interested on going for a nice vacation he should consider making a trip to this hotel.

Title: Composition of Hangul Jamo
Author/Date: Hyunju Lee, 2009
Location: Walker Hall Design Museum
Mixed Media

Taking a glance at this piece of art makes a person wonders what is the designer trying to express or show. The overall shape of this piece of art is a block from a Tetris game which most of you know. Inside the art piece he is using similar shapes from that game and has them in like two groups. Also, if you noticed the colors of the bottom half of the block is different than the top half. The bottom half colors are dark and dull color. This could mean that they started with suffering and sadness in the beginning of life and as time got by happiness and joy came along with this being expressed with brighter colors. The empty spot in the middle shows the transition of between both feelings. Looking at the bottom half have less blocks then the top half. This means that the suffering and sadness wasn't for very long time or it wasn't very bad of suffering. Compare the bottom to the top which there is about twice the amount of the blocks and more closer to each other’s then the bottom ones. They’re even connected to each other’s more than the bottom half. This piece of art conducts ethic behavior.
